Day 2 - Spanish Fort, Alabama

California or Bust…
Day 2
Sunday, October 23, 2011

So nice to feel the cooler fall weather… 58 degrees this morning with dew on the grass.  We have another 400 mile day today and plan to stay the night at Meaher State Park in Spanish Fort, Alabama.  We made a quick stop at the Florida Citrus (and tourist) Center to pick up a few oranges, tangerines & grapefruit before getting on I-75 at 9:30am.

Well, we officially are headed WEST on I-10.  Do you know how many states we will travel on the lower 48 to get to California and can you name them?  Come on… quick thinking and no atlas.   I forgot how long it takes to drive “outta” Florida… two days of driving and 810 miles from Marathon to the Alabama state line.  Drew is grateful for Sirius radio and happy that he is listening to the Nascar race in Talladega, AL.  We also gained an hour after crossing in to the Central Time Zone… BONUS!

Rest area... still in Florida!

Brigit passed out for the ride.
We arrived Meaher State Park around 4:30 and a 423 mile drive.  The Park is situated in the wetlands at the North end of Mobile Bay.  We pulled into site #27 overlooking the Bay, I-10 and distant views of the City of Mobile.  Brigit and Riley took us on a self-guided walk on one of the boardwalks with a close view of the Mobile Delta.  We enjoyed the sunset with a stone crab appetizer and had pre-made crock pot chuck roast over egg noodles with a side of fresh broccoli for another great dinner!  No cable TV but we had super digital TV antenna signals and watched the Amazing Race before turning in early.   Off to Cajun Country tomorrow with a couple of days in Abbeville, Louisiana…
Cora caught on camera... sitting!  RELAX

Quick set up...

Beautiful sunset over Mobile Bay.

Change in latitude!

View over delta with Mobile in the distance.
