Day 1 - Ocala, Florida

California or Bust…
Day 1
Saturday, October 22, 2011

To blog or not to blog… that is the question.  We decided yes… not only because it passes the time on the long drive days but it will give us something to look back on days, months & years from now.  This adventure will take us from the fabulous Florida Keys along the Southern route of the United States to Central California.  We (Drew, our rescued Standard Poodle Brigit, our GoldenDoodle boy Riley and myself) have set out in the KeyZRV for a well deserved and long overdue vacation.  Our route, by MapQuest calculations, traveling West on I-10 and returning East on I-40, will be about 7,200 miles round trip.  You may have followed our KeyZRV Trippin’ in October and November of 2009 when we traveled 7,500 miles round trip to Victoria BC and back on the Maye Baggs North American Tour with the dogs and Mom who is now 91 years old.

Sidenote:  Mom (Maye) was not too happy when we told her we were taking this trip without her.  It really is best for her, although she does not think that, and she will be visited daily and taken care of by many close friends and neighbors.  We think she was more upset because we took the dogs.

Anyway, for the first day we have planned to drive from Marathon to the Ocala area which is Central Florida and about 402 miles.  With a few last minute details to take care of and the final preparations for travel, we pulled out of Marathon at 10:15am arriving at the Ocala Sun RV Resort at 5:30pm.   Not much to blog about… but it’s a start.  The dogs settled in with Lieutenant Riley at Drew’s right side… and Brigit sprawled out on the couch for most of the drive.  We enjoyed a dinner of fresh Florida Keys Stone Crab complete with our favorite J champagne.  Drew and I have both begun to unwind and relax from our every day busy lives… we are so happy and fortunate to be on the road and looking forward to every mile… California or Bust!!!

  1. Are your plates set up on the same side because you and Drew like to eat sitting next to each other, or did you not want to disturb Brigit? :-)

  2. No disturbing Brigit... however she does make a good foot stool or foot warmer, whichever is needed... also we both have a view of the TV. :o)
